Winter photos:

A week of powder snow and beautiful weather in Nov 2010 - the River Tyne near Hexham.
And a month later, at Christmas, the river looked like this
- totally frozen over for a distance of about 1.4 kilometres from the Tyne Bridge westwards, and with ice thick enough to take the weight of an adult. In 1929 a similar photograph shows people ice skating and walking on the ice near the bridge - see http://hexham.journallive.co.uk/2009/02/hexham-nostalgia-core-of-histo.html.

To end 2010 the weather brought us some wonderful winter scenery - powder snow, sun and still conditions combining to create lovely contrasty images - ideal for any photographer out walking! Two slideshows with more of these winter photos can be found at PhotoSlideshows

Tanfield Railway and its North Pole Express special a few days before Santa sets off on his epic journey
Tanfield Railway and the North Pole Express - because of the extreme cold, with ice affecting the tracks and points, a bank engine was used to assist operations

What a start to the year in the UK - snow, ice and beautiful still clear sunlit days hearalded a return to the traditional winter for most of us. We may have complained but for the photographer life for a while was rather sweet

Powder snow and no wind means that even the slightest breeze can help create lovely photographs
