About Us
You've arrived at the website of JustSwanningAround.co.uk - the home of photographs and photo artworks resulting from many years of wandering around the UK and Europe with a love of photography.

A keen amateur interest has over the years developed into a self-styled semi-pro attitude to photography, exploring the links between my work with gardens/landscapes and art. The frustrated artist inside perhaps trying to reach the forefront. The thought of thousands of photographs hidden away in a filing cabinet. The frustrations of the time to turn a photograph into something that appeals to others. The fun of showing what can be done to change a photograph into something completely different. The enjoyment of friendships. The love of life and nature.

Keep looking by this site - perhaps it will change more regularly than you think!

Permissions and Public Liability Insurance: [Be warned]
Due to the nature of photography in these modern times, the use of DSLRs and tripods seems to be a problem to those who like to organise our lives. Photography in certain locations can be a problem and can lead to unexpected conflicts and confrontations - much of this can be read about in the photography press. However you feel about this issue, it is important that you give some thought to the intended use of your photographs and where you are taking your photographs.
So think about who or what is in the photograph, and respect the right of people who do not want to be in that image. Permissions must be sought in many locations, and it is always better to check first, photograph later, especially if the photographs are for commercial use. For personal use, there is still generally leeway! In certain areas, security issues may have to be considered and this can include not just the obvious locations, such as Ministry of Defence property, but also the less obvious locations such as shopping centres. Plan in advance, do your research and check - security doesn't mean that permissions won't be given, it just means that someone needs to know that you are in a certain location, and knows why you are there.
However, there is also the issue of Public Liability to consider, and especially for commercial photography in many locations Public Liability Insurance is a necessity stipulated as part of any agreement allowing photography at a particular location. A badly placed tripod in a busy public place can trip up a visitor, there may be damage done by the photographer to the location, and indeed a heavy DSLR and tripod could fall and hurt someone - the owners or agents for many locations used by the public, etc. have to make sure that risks are minimised by ensuring that photographers have Public Liability insurance.

Commercial aspects: [A lay-person's reminder to you]
I consider this website to be non-commercial - there is no advertising and there is no financial gain from the images used on this site. However ...............
In obtaining permissions to undertake photography in certain locations, the use of any images taken is an important consideration for any agreement.
In certain situations a similar image may be possible from a public right of way for example, but once on someone's property whether Government property, private, National Trust, English Heritage, etc., etc., the property owner or their agents have a right to protect their commercial interests.
Please respect the rights of land/property owners or their agents to control the use of photographs taken on their property. Commercial rights are important - in general, for the Gigapan panoramas a commercial agreement may not be necessary - however, the global nature of the internet means that where-ever necessary or possible, permissions will be sought for the taking and display of images on this website, www.gigapan.org and Google Earth.
In addition, please respect the copyright of all photographs on this website - copyright of all images on this website belongs to Chris Atkinson unless otherwise stated.
Photographs on this site are of low quality generally to limit any copying. Gigapan panoramas on this site make use of Adobe Flash 9 viewers which again limits copying.

Who Where Why & When?
Based in the great North of England with it's long history of confrontation, invasion and reconcilliation, the powerful draws of nature, history and scenery are a key part of the visual delights of this region.

The contrasts of life are ever present and for any photographer there is a constant attraction and delight in all that this region provides. Industry rubbing shoulders with agriculture, the coast washing over the dominating body of the wild moors, and the dark colours of the soil mixing with the lightness of the sky.

To see Iron Age history, the impact of the Romans, the hardships of the leadminers in remote moorlands, the disappearing remnants of coal, iron ore, steel and shipbuilding, the rise of 'culture' and iconic buildings such as the Sage Music Centre, and so much more - all within 30 minutes of my home, what more could one ask for? Well okay, did I hear someone say what about mountains - well the spectacular mountain scenery of the Lake District is only an hour away! Give me 3 or 4 hours and I'll be in Snowdonia or the Cairngorms. And if I fly from Newcastle, well Switzerland and France here I come.
I've lived and worked here for a good few years, too many to recall perhaps, but there's still much to see.
JustSwanningAround -
So where did this name arise from?

Well to most people 'just swanning around' is when someone is being perhaps slightly lazy, not doing too much, feeling relaxed and enjoying themselves, when all around are working hard!
You may have your own view on what it means, and I'm happy to find out what you think it means! Show me a shortcut and I'll perhaps take it - if I get to the endpoint before you, don't be surprised. If the endpoint has not been compromised by taking the shortcut, then justswanningaround has perhaps been worthwhile. But who will be the judge? I'll leave the epitaph to others at a later date!!

It's a view of me, perhaps from some of those around me, which I'm happy enough to perpetuate. I'm a housedad and proud of it. I'm garden designer and proud of it. I'm a photographer and proud of it.

There is some truth, but perhaps some of my photographs will show otherwise. Look into the photos and find who's 'just swanning around' in them.
